Outdoor comfort is paramount when out on-deck. Wind flow and emissions can ruin the onboard experience for owners, guests and charter customers.

 

Brookes Bell have developed proprietary software tools for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Propulsion Hydrodynamics, originally used on large cruise liners.

It was vital to ensure passengers weren’t experiencing discomfort on windy decks or breathing in emissions from Ship’s Funnels, for example. Using the adapted software, design solutions were devised for onboard vessels which negated the effect.

Since then, the software is used to improve a Superyacht hull’s performance through the water and also to alleviate potential wind tunnels or discomfort from exhaust fumes on deck. It is also used in evacuation simulations.


How it works

Software is used to gauge the flow of emissions or fluids (and in evacuation cases, people) in many different scenarios across hulls or superstructures. Problem areas are highlighted and designs can then be modified or changed.

Benefits

Testing designs in a virtually generated environment has proved priceless in many previous cases. It is always better to find out sooner than later as it’s much cheaper and easier to resolve the issue in the design stage than it is during sea trials. The computer software has highlighted issues to be solved saving time, money and inconvenience in the long run.
